The Market area is being revitalised and re-imagined with a series of bold new residential, retail, public realm and leisure projects. The re-energised Market area will act as a northern destination for commerce, complementing the new Westfield centre to the south and encouraging shoppers to travel on foot between the two.
The World Mile, a new culturally-focused, independent shopping and leisure destination stretching from Ivesgate to Manningham, will bring new experiences, tastes and sounds to Bradford. The World Mile will complement the Westfield development attracting new traders, shoppers and visitors from all over the region and beyond.
The Kirkgate Shopping Centre has seen an £11 million refurbishment. Further tenants are being introduced to accompany the existing variety of retailers. Darley Street has been revitalised by extensive public realm works, with plans underway for similar schemes on Kirkgate and Tyrell Street.
A Market Urban Village will integrate the city centre with the surrounding residential areas generating an effortless flow of people through the city.
Major Projects within The Market:
- Market Urban Village – A new mixed-use residential development set around a series of courtyards positively responding to the listed Simes Street Chapel and Fountain Hall. The Urban Village will attract new residents into the area, integrating the city centre with surrounding residential areas and concentrating the retail core.
- World Mile – This scheme will maximise commercial opportunities associated with Bradford’s cosmopolitan population, and attract new trade and shoppers from around the world.
- Rawson Square – A dedicated space for outdoor markets, events and street performances will create a new focal point for pedestrians moving through the area.
- Northgate Footbridge – The potential construction of a new landmark pedestrian crossing over Drewton Road will provide a vital link and integration between the city centre and Manningham. This highly visible scheme ensures the surrounding communities benefit from the city centre regeneration.
