| Listerhills Sustainable Student Village has been announced as a finalist in a national awards ceremony which celebrates excellence in building. It is one of the first developments in the world to achieve an outstanding BREEAM rating which is a universal measurement for environmentally friendly buildings. The student village - a project delivered by developer Mi7 and GB Building Solutions with support from Bradford Council - has already won the regional award for sustainability at the finals of the West Yorkshire Building Excellence Awards. The Awards are organised by the five West Yorkshire local authorities' building control services to celebrate and reward quality construction across the region. After considering hundreds of schemes from across West Yorkshire, 34 projects were submitted to the regional finals last week with 13 awards being handed out. Bradford put forward seven out of which there were three winners and one special commendation. The winners were (Community award) Culture Fusion in Thornton Road, a collaboration between BAM Construction Ltd and Bradford Council; (Sustainability) Listerhills Sustainable Student Village in Smith Street off Listerhills Road, and (Education) Horton A School of Health Studies Building, Bradford University, in Great Horton Road which is a collaboration between ISG Construction and the university. An additional Highly Commendable award was given to the community buildings and workspace units called Inspire Bradford Business Park on Harrogate Road, Bradford, under the Sustainability category. The awards scheme was set up eight years ago to commend quality development, both public and private, across West Yorkshire and the UK. For the West Yorkshire region representatives from the building service departments under Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield, Calderdale and Kirklees Councils, sit on the panel of judges. They look at building standards, technical innovation and sustainable designs at a local level. Only one of the Yorkshire schemes in the sustainability category could be put forward to the national finals and it was announced yesterday that it would be the Listerhills Sustainable Village. This development which provides 1,026 study bedrooms, achieved a BREEAM rating of 'Outstanding' and is a testament to sustainable design and construction. The builders on this scheme were GB Solutions and the architects were GWP Architecture. The developers were Mi7 Developments. Bradford Council Leader, Coun David Green, said: "We are absolutely delighted that several Bradford schemes have been awarded and it is great to see Listerhills student village get the recognition it deserves by being put through to the national final. "Listerhills is a pioneering scheme and one of the first developments in the world to achieve such an accolade on the grounds of its sustainability." The finals are taking place at The Brewery in London in November |
